JANUARY 2015 MEETING PHOTOS

We started the year with Winterfest, hosted by the Secret Society of Model Builders, in conjunction with the San Diego Air and Space Museum at Gillespie Field in El Cajon on January 24.

The special theme was "Space Race", which was won by David Weeks with his Vostok space craft.
The contest saw a good turn around with about 150 models

Each category had a "Best of" award, with Ethan Idenmill getting the "Best Sci-Fi" award for his Gamilon Destroyer Squadron, while Mike O'Leary won "Best of Show" with his Albatros D.Va.
January was also the month of our club's first Quarterly Contest, at our January 30 meeting. What the contest lack in attendance was largely compensated by model quality.
Judge Jerry Jackson, aided by new-comers Joshua and Sophia Shepherd, had some tough decisions to make. He decided to split the nine entries into three Aircraft categories, 1:72nd Scale, 1:48th Scale, and 1:32nd Scale and Larger.

Jose Gonzalez took home first place in the 1:72nd scale with his Wildcat, a beautifully finished Academy model.

Richard Abraham collected first place in the 1:48th scale category with his A-4, finished in the colors and markings of the Brazilian Navy, true to his tradition of building birds of Latin America.

Rich Durham won first place in the 1:32nd Scale and Larger category with his 1:32nd scale Zero, from Tamiya. Rich used Tamiya paints and decals and Eduard's seat belts. He also replaced the guns.
Second place in 1:32nd Scale and Larger went to Mike O'Leary for his DH-9a, a 1:32 scale kit from Wingnut Wings. Mike being the expert in WWI aircraft, especially in 1:32 scale, his work did not disappoint anyone.
Dan Swiersz got third place in 1:32nd Scale and Larger with his 1:18 scale F/A 18, beautifully done from a... toy that he bought some 12 years ago. The aircraft is finished in the colors and markings of Fighter Squadron Composite 12 (VCF-12), based at NAS Oceana, Virginia. Dan engineered a stand that allows to change the aircraft's angle of climb and of turn.
And Mike O'Leary took Popular Vote - Best of Show with his DH-9a aircraft. Congratulations to Mike and to all who won awards at the contest!

Our thanks to all who participated!
