- San Diego is home to the Flying Leatherneck Aviation Museum, the only museum in the world dedicated exclusively to US Marine Corps aviation. IPMS San Diego has teamed up with the museum for mutual support. IPMS members have worked behind the scenes with the museum’s curator, Steve Smith, to organize the model collection in the warehouse.
The major effort this year was the construction of a diorama of the 50th anniversary of Operation Shufly. This operation was the first USMC combat operation in Vietnam and was conducted from April 1962 through March 1965. It involved USMC H-34 helicopters and crews that ferried South Vietnamese troops to and from combat locations.
The diorama displays a landing in a rice paddy, and is located in the cargo hold of an H-34 of HMM-163.
